Hi Will;
You say that

"We are also very excited about their willingness to include Ministry as equal partners in the development of the product, even before the contract was signed. "

The press release says that:

"As part of this agreement, Marshfield Clinic will provide planning, project management, implementation, training, customer service and technical support services to facilitate the installation of these clinical software applications."

Is Ministry a co-owner of the software or will it have staff directly developing the software going forward? I'm trying to determine what Ministry IT's ongoing involvement is, other than the completed due diligence and vendor selection of Cattails.

Will - thanks for sharing. From the interview re: St. Clare's, GE was the core inpatient vendor coupled with Cattails. I assumed Cattails was the ambulatory record and catch-all clinical data repository. I'd be interested to hear the details of the approach for your organization.

I think this is wonderful! My only question for you is from the point of view of a medical consumer. As one of the many people in the state/nation who regularly experience a shift in health care providers, I often experience a great deal of difficulty having my records transferred effectively and timely from one system to another.

It looks like your system is far-reaching, but is also not a national (or even state-wide) standard. That said, I'm not actually suggesting it needs to be, I'm merely wondering if part of what our system has built up, allows for the need to efficiently transfer records out or in, and how it allows for the dirrerences in the way the data is stored?

Killing projects is a brave move that few have the guts to do - I find that a lot of (dare I say cowardly?) PMs would rather continue throwing good money after bad in the hope of saving the day rather than suffering what will be in relative terms some egg on face. Governance is the key, isn't it? Show me effective governance though!

There's an expression over here in the UK that "it's no use crying over spilt milk". Any investment (cash / resource / effort) incurred in a failing project has gone to the great accountant in the sky - but most business and IT managers can't see this, with the inevitable result of greater losses.

Killing a project is a critical business skill - good post!
